Camping
Camping is not allowed in national parks and is not encouraged anywhere on the island.

Dress
Clothing is casual, including light summer wear for most of the year and a sweater for cooler evenings. Locals do not appreciate swimwear being worn on the streets of the capital city, Roseau, or in the villages. Dress respectfully.

Driving
Dominicans drive on the left side of the road. Use caution when crossing streets and/or driving. Mountain roads are narrow, with many curves. Honk your horn on blind turns. A driving permit is required and available from local car rental agencies.

Electricity
The electricity system is 220-240 volts, 50 cycles. Power outlets are 3-prong style. Some hotels have 110v, but bring a small travel transformer if required. Be prepared for power outages. Battery operated clocks, shavers, electronics, etc., will ensure uninterrupted enjoyment of your toys.

Flora/Fauna
Do not pick wildflowers. Do not disturb wildlife.

Personal Safety
The island has numerous waterfalls. These can cause strong currents in nearby pools. If swimming near a waterfall, wear a Personal Flotation Device.

Dominica is covered by rain forest - pack accordingly. Its volcanic origins are evident in the rugged terrain, so appropriate footwear is important for getting around comfortably and safely. Rocks are often slippery, hike with care.

Do not go to isolated areas alone or at night. Do not leave personal possessions unattended on the beach or while hiking.

Photography
Don’t take photos of people without their permission.

Store hours
Many shops close midday – from 1 pm to 2 pm. Shops are closed on Sundays.

Taxis
Taxis have standard sightseeing rates. They do not have meters. Negotiate your rate before you go anywhere and make sure you’re clear on the currency you’re talking about. Also, taxis can be difficult to hail after 6 pm so booking ahead will help ensure your plans for the evening.

Tipping
While a service charge is sometimes included in your bill, follow standard tipping rules if it isn’t. Tip 10% - 15% depending on service. Simple taxi fares won't require a tip, but do tip for rides that include additional help, advice or guided tours.

CHILL OUT
You’re going to Dominica to experience island living. The pace of life likely moves more slowly than you’re used to. Relax and enjoy it!
